Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make an appointment?
Just give us a call! You do not need a referral from another doctor to make an appointment with a Solstice Maternity Physician. You can simple call us at 466-7243 to book your appointment
CAN I SEE A SOLSTICE DOCTOR AND A MIDWIFE?
If you are unsure if you would like a Solstice Physician or a Midwife to provide your pregnancy care, you can book an appointment to discuss your options but once you choose who you would like to see, you will not be able to switch back and forth. You can choose to transfer your care between a Midwife and Solstice Physician until you are 20 weeks. If you are seeing a Midwife and you have a complication in your pregnancy that requires the support of a Solstice Physician, your Midwife will make a referral for you to book an appointment. Solstice Physicians are not able to see midwifery patients for appointments without a consultation request from the Midwife.
When should I book my first appointment?
As soon as you find out you are pregnant! We are happy to see you early in your pregnancy to discuss how things are going and give you an introduction for what to expect as you move through your pregnancy. At your first appointment, your Solstice Maternity Physician will review your medical history and talk to you about how things are going in your pregnancy. You will have a chance to ask any questions at this time. We will also review recommended prenatal blood work and book your dating ultrasound at your first appointment.
How often will I have prenatal appointments?
In a healthy pregnancy, you will be seen for routine check ups every 4 weeks from the time you find out you are pregnant until you are 28 weeks along. You will be seen every 2 weeks until you are 36 weeks along and then you will be seen weekly until your baby is born. You can book appointments to speak to a Solstice Physician at any time between your routine visits if you have questions or concerns.
When will I get my Ultrasounds?
You will be offered two routine ultrasound in your pregnancy. The first is your dating ultrasound, which is done in the first trimester after 8-10 weeks to confirm your due date. You will also be offered an anatomic ultrasound at 18-22 weeks to have a look at baby and make sure everything is developing normally and to check where your placenta is. The second ultrasound is where you can find out the sex of your baby (if you want to know)!
When should I start taking prenatal vitamins?
If possible, start before becoming pregnant (when you start trying). Otherwise, start taking them as soon as you know you are pregnant.
How does the Solstice Call group work?
At Solstice we have nine dedicated maternity care doctors who are excited to help ensure you have a happy, healthy pregnancy. When you book your first appointment, you will be booked in to see next available Solstice Physician who fits your schedule. You can also request a specific physician if you would like. During your pregnancy, you can choose if you would like to stick to one doctor for all your appointments, or if you would like to have appointments with different doctors. Many people enjoy the continuity of having one doctor provide the majority of their prenatal care and then to meet the other doctors later in their pregnancy
At all times, one of our doctors are on call at Whitehorse General Hospital. When you come to the hospital for your delivery (or for any other pregnancy related concerns after 20 weeks), our on call physician is available to provide assessments, medical care and other supports as needed.
When Will I Have my postpartum/baby appointments?
We will see you and your baby within 1-2 weeks of leaving the hospital. If you live in Whitehorse, you doctor may be able to provide a home visit. Both you and baby will have appointments with us six weeks after your delivery. If you have any concerns between your appointments, we are happy to see you at any time.
